Dear Diary...
I just started my very own shortfilm: "Forget-me-not". As you are always really interested in my work I'll let you know what I've done so far and keep you up to date! You know, when doing a shortfilm, it's all about the story. You don't know the story? Well, here it is:

An old storywriter falls into depression after his wife dies. The characters he created in his stories, which are interacting in reality, are trying to bring him back to life. The more the storywriter ignores his imaginary characters, the more invisible they get, until the old man finds one of his books. As soon as he starts remembering his characters, they get back their visibility. The old man realises that if the writes about his dead wife, she will life forever in his memories.

Sounds good, right? And as I have really good people collaborating with me, I think this will be a wonderful film!

It's done!!

Dear Diary...

It's done it's done it's done!!! The film is finally rendered and uploaded! Thank you to everyone who helped me doing this film and especially the people who entertained me while I was waiting for the film to render... again and again :-D

As I am not 100% sure if the effect looks like I want it, there might be a few changes over the summer. But enough of that. Here, finally, is my film: forget-me-not

A deadline is not the end...

Dear Diary...

So, deadline day! And my film is almost halfway done... which is a lot! I've spend the last 2 weeks trying to render (save the final images) all of the scenes. I've finished a 3rd of the film and still have about 300 hours left to render.
Well, while waiting I used the time to rig a book. The main character is writing in the book and he will close it as well. I thought it might be the easiest jst to add some basic bones. And voila, it works perfectly! Now I can open and close my book.

Is anything truly gone if you can remember?

Dear Diary.

Yes I know. If you are directing a film there is quite a lot of work to do, you don't have time for all the animation. Well I thought, it can't be too bad. Texture a bit, find a nice style, composit the scenes, cut the film, thats alright in 12 weeks, I can do that next to animating. Ha! That all takes so much time, there is almost no time left to animate.
There is just one more week until the final deadline (yes, Friday the 20th)and I just almost finished the first scene... But at least I can start render everything thats finished animating as the modelling is finally done.
Here is the first scene which I hope I can start render tomorrow.
Yes, his hand is going through the table and no, he doesn't have facial expressions. I need something to do for tonight :-)

Style-test the 2nd

Dear diary...
It's been a while, yes, I missed you too! There are just sooo many things going on, the kitchen and the porch are build, the study is almost done as well. Now it's time to texture and play with effects. And wow, that is really not easy! Yes it looks good, but does it look good animated as well? Does it look like I wanted it too look? And if so, will everybody else like it as well?
The modelling part is going really well but the animation is going a bit slow at the moment. Gabby and Joe are doing good, but my animation part isn't good. There are just so many other things to do on that film, animation is pushed further and further...
Well, but now Lisa and I've played enough with the colours and the effects, I am really pleased with these two test-renders which means I can completely focus on the animation now!
Please click on the pictures to see them in full size :-)

The study -the shelves are still empty

The study 2- build and textured by Laura, she is going to finish everything end of this week!
The kitchen - build and textured by Helen, you can see the furniture here

Gratulations, it's a porch!

Dear Diary...
Everything will start one day, it will grow, learn, experience. This is called development, and a porch can do the same!

PreViz, a room of boxes

Dear Diary...
The PreViz takes longer than I expectet. So I'll show you the Pre-visualisation of the rooms now, and as soon as I finally finish the PreViz of the film I'll upload that as well.
For the Pre-visualisation I've build all my rooms in boxes, not really detailed or with textures. But now I can give these rooms to my artists and they can start building the rooms properly while my animators can starts animating. I am busy to animate the man and the woman, set up all cameras and the lighting. Well, and everything inbetween :-)

Its a rainy SUNday

Dear Diary...
its sunday, a very nice sunday. What day would be better to meet a good friend, have a Crêpes in the sun at Riverside-Market and then go to uni and do some colour/texture test? Thanks to Lisa I finally have some texture-test I can show you! This is how the film might look:
Yes it is 3D and yes it looks like a painting! How cool is that??
It's just a test though, imagine how it looks in a moving environment with proper light... uuuhh!!

Moving Rrroar!

Dear Diary...
He is alive!
But he is not the only one. The old woman, the fairy AND the dragon are alive. I've put a video together to show you the turnarounds of Ben and Lisa's models, and mine of course! Oh, and the dragon's deform-test as well.

There is an elf that is almost finished as well. Gabby want's to give him a final skin treatment before he is ready for the world!
Next point on my ToDo-List is to finish the Video-PreViz and try to figure out the texture.
So, hope to see you next week :-)

Rrroar!

Dear Diary...
I finished modelling the dragon! Yay! That was fun. Here he is.

For our university course I have to texture him different, he need to be a "proper" dragon with leather wings, horns and claws. Next week he will learn to move!

The cast!

Dear Diary...
Sorry for beeing really bad in keeping you up to date. I try my best,  promise!
Last week we had our deadline for the PreProduction. It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be, I think I finally learned "time management". Well, we'll see with the next deadline :-)
But finally I can show you how the characters look like!
Here are the main character: The old man and his wife. The dragon and the elves/fairy are half transparetn as they are "just" memories. They are his created characters.

And at the moment they are getting modelled, so exciting when your drawings become 3D!!!The wife is modelled by Ben, Lisa is modelling the fairy and Gabby is doing the elf. The old man is modelled by Dan, but he has to finish an other project, so he will start in 2 weeks. I am modelling the dragon. Thats so much fun!

Next step is to finish modelling, rig and texture the character. Do a layout-animatic and try some stylistic in 3ds Max. Well, that will be interesting, a CG "painted" animated movie?

Moving pictures...

Dear Diary...
welcome to the modern world. I bet noone will really look at the Storyboard when there is an Animatic! Well, I think I wouldn't. Moving pictures are so much more interesting! I think, thats one of the reasons why I want to quit my job as a graphic designer and want to become an animator.
This is my first version of the Animatic, Critique is always welcome :-)

Due to snow...

Dear Diary...
Due to weather conditions I was not able to fight my way through the snow into University to upload my Storyboard and my Animatic. Well, the problem wasn't 10cm of snow, the problem was more that University closed due to 10cm of snow. But know everything is alright and we survived the hard and horrible winter :-)
Christmas was very nice and having a barbeque on new years eve - let 2011 begin!
But now, on to business!

My first schedule idea was to design all the characters in my story. After the design and the look of the film is done, I wanted to do the Storyboard and the Animatic. Well, that schedule was the wrong. I have 2 good Animators collaborating with me on my film, Joe is doing some animation with the dragon and Gabriele animates the scene with the elves playing on the table. And to do the pre-production for their animation, Joe and Gabby have to know how the scene looks and how long their scene is going to be. My part as director than is not to do everything in the order how I think it is right, but to give everyone their task. I'm not the only one working on this project. Storyboard and Animatic are more important than the look of the characters.  I can design the characters while Joe and Gabby are planning their parts of the animation.
So here it is, the Storyboard, the design comes later:
